Seventy-six competitors from twenty countries around the globe will vie for the title in the 9th IOM World Championship beginning held from 28th May to 4th June, 2011. This bi-annual event was successfully staged in Barbados in 2009.
Gonsalves, fresh off a first place finish in the Dallas Blowout North American Prep Race and ranking 16th in the world, along with Allen sitting in 20th position, will come up against reigning world Champion Zvonko Jelacic of Croatia and second placed, former champion Brad Gibson of the UK.
The International One Meter is a wind powered, radio controlled yacht, the most popular RC racing yacht in the world.
Recognition is given to Peter “Rabbit’ Allen for organizing the first IOM Barbados Regatta in 2005, having competed in both the 2003 World Championships in Vancouver and the 2004 Sable Pines Regatta in Florida. In 2008, the Mount Gay IOM International Regatta was staged in Barbados followed by the Mount Gay Boatyard IOM World Championships in 2009.
This year the local Mount Gay IOM Regatta will be held from June 29th through to July 3rd.
The Barbados Sailing Association recently presented a cheque to Allen in support of their campaign for the 2011 IOM World Championships.
