Sailing team to represent Barbados at the 2011 Caribbean Dinghy Championships

Five of Barbados’s top dinghy sailors left the island on Thursday evening to compete against some of the best sailors from the rest of the Caribbean at the 2011 Caribbean Dinghy Championships being held in Antigua over the weekend. The team comprises Leisl Brewster, Kimberley Gittens, Scott Gittens, Jason Tindale and Charlie Gloumeau.

At thirteen years of age, Scott Gittens is the youngest sailor in the team. Having just returned from the Optimist Pre-World Championships in the Dominican Republic and the ScotiaBank Regatta in St Thomas where he gained a wealth of experience, talented and determined young Gittens will represent Barbados in the Zoom 8 Class.

Veteran sailor Charlie Gloumeau will sail in the Laser Olympic Standard Class. Gloumeau is no stranger to the Championships having very successfully represented Barbados on many occasions in both the Laser and Sunfish Classes.

Jason Tindale will join Gloumeau sailing in the Laser Radial Class. Gaining second place in this Class when the Championships were last held in 2009, Tindale is also well acquainted with the event, having successfully sailed for Barbados for several years in both of the Laser Classes, the Zoom 8 Class and the Optimist Class.

Completing the team are Leisl Brewster and newcomer, Kimberley Gittens, who will sail together in the two-man Sport 16 Class. Having represented Barbados on two previous occasions in the Championships, the more experienced Brewster will take the helm whilst Gittens will take crew position. Extremely keen sailors who began their sailing careers in Optimist Dinghies, the young girls have benefitted greatly over recent weeks from coaching provided by the experienced Peter ‘Wipers’ Hoad.

The team will be accompanied to Antigua by Peter Hoad as Coach and Penny McIntyre as Manager, and the Barbados Sailing Association would like to thank the Barbados Olympic Association for its continued support.
