Learn to sail with the BSA/ BODA

The BSA, in conjunction with the Barbados Optimist Dinghy Association, runs Sailing Camps during the school holidays throughout the summer and at Easter and Christmas. The Camps run from 8.30am to 2.30pm each day, Monday to Friday. Each of the four Summer Camps runs for two weeks whereas the Easter and Christmas Camps are usually one week each. Saturday courses are also held throughout each school term. Each course runs for five consecutive Saturdays from 8.30 am to 12.30 pm.

All Camps and courses take place at the Barbados Yacht Club and cater to sailors of all ability levels from beginners to racers. We welcome persons of all ages from as young as 6 years who wish to learn to sail or improve their sailing skills.

Teaching is done in various Levels as outlined below. Levels taught at each Camp and Saturday course are tailored to meet the specific needs of the sailors taking the courses.

  • Level 1 is for beginners and teaches students the basics of sailing, including the parts of a sail boat, sailing on the various angles of the wind, and manoeuvres such as tacking and gybing.

  • Level 2 teaches students boat control and boat handling skills. BSA Members must have completed Level 2 before they can take out a boat on their own.

  • Level 3 teaches students advanced boat control and seamanship skills, including man overboard drill and coming alongside. Students are also introduced to dinghy racing.

  • Level 4 is an advanced course which teaches a variety of advanced skills and racing techniques.

  • Level 5 is for sailors who have completed up to Level 4 and wish to become instructors.
