Learn to sail

Sail training is currently run at the Barbados Yacht Club by Isaac and Marianne Brown in association with the Barbados Yacht Club, the Barbados Sailing Association and the Barbados Optimist Dinghy Association. Training caters to sailors of all ability levels from beginners, to those who wish to improve their sailing skills, to those who wish to race. Persons of all ages, from as young as 6 years, are welcome.

Teaching is done in various levels as outlined below and levels taught are tailored to meet the specific needs of the sailors.

  • Level 1 is for beginners and teaches students the basics of sailing, including the parts of a sail boat, sailing on the various angles of the wind, and manoeuvres such as tacking and gybing.

  • Level 2 teaches students boat control and boat handling skills. BSA Members must have completed Level 2 before they can take out a boat on their own.

  • Level 3 teaches students advanced boat control and seamanship skills, including man overboard drill and coming alongside. Students are also introduced to dinghy racing.

  • Level 4 is an advanced course which teaches a variety of advanced skills and racing techniques.

  • Level 5 is for sailors who have completed up to Level 4 and wish to become instructors.
